Press Release

Call for stallholders

Sydney Sustainable Markets is calling for applications for new stalls at our Saturday morning markets in Taylor Square.  If you’re a grower or licensed producer of food looking for an outlet in inner-city Sydney, we’d like to hear from you.

Please note: we are a market for local NSW farmers and producers to sell direct to their customers in inner city Sydney. Our stallholders are not resellers.  Our stallholders must be involved in a permanent, hands-on capacity in the production of their products, thereby providing their customers with a depth of product knowledge.

Our market promotes sustainable agriculture by giving priority to biodynamic, organic and minimal spray produce. Genetically engineered foods (including animals knowingly raised on GE feed) cannot be sold at the market.

We have vacancies in the following categories:

  • Dairy
  • Fish and seafood
  • Fruit
  • Meat
  • Nuts and grains
  • Poultry and eggs
  • Vegetables
  • Flowers
  • Plants, herbs and seedlings
  • Animal food
  • Baked, bakery and yeast products
  • Cakes, biscuits and pastries
  • Coffee
  • Honey
  • Jams, preserves and condiments
  • Wine and other beverages.

Iconic Taylor Square in the heart of Darlinghurst is home to a bustling market square, with farmers and producers offering fresh produce and a taste of the country to inner city dwellers.

Sydney Sustainable Markets Inc. runs a weekly Saturday market, serving local residents and visitors from all over Sydney.

Our goals are:

  • To run a genuine, weekly Farmers Market which adheres to the Australian Farmers Market Association Charter.
  • To provide local residents with access to quality, farm fresh produce at moderate prices.
  • To celebrate the values of Slow Food. Good, clean and fair. Good quality food, clean and sustainably grown and at a fair price.
  • To promote sustainable agriculture practices, helping to eliminate the use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers and reducing the distance your food travels to you, helping to reduce carbon emissions.
  • To deepen community spirit in the neighbourhood and provide a lively meeting space for residents to gather.
  • To facilitate an educational platform for sustainable living practices within an urban context.
  • To support the revitalisation of the Taylor Square/Oxford Street Cultural Quarter and increase enjoyment and usage of the public spaces.
  • To increase the profile of Taylor Square and Oxford Street Cultural Quarter within greater Sydney.

Market facilitator Jacqueline Briggs is passionate about creating a local, down-to-earth, community style market, playing a part in reviving and deepening community spirit in the Oxford Street Cultural Quarter. Sydney Sustainable Markets @ Taylor Square embraces the ideals of the Slow Food movement, with a commitment to supporting regional producers, and particularly those who are farming heritage or rare breed produce. We are also seeking local backyard gardeners, growers and small home based producers around the inner city who would love to share their produce at the market.

Local residents can discover seasonal fruit and vegetables (organic and low chemical inputs), free range poultry and eggs, rare breed meats, fish, hand made pasta, artisan cheeses, condiments, organic bread, olive oil, honey, flowers, herbs and much more. From time to time we hold mini-seminars and talks on urban sustainability from local chefs, foodies and presenters with a passion for inspiring others towards more sustainable lifestyle choices.
